KICA Transfer Opportunity

Looking to attend a Kansas private, four-year institution after earning your 91ÖÆƬ³§ degree? Thanks to a special agreement between Kansas community colleges and the Kansas Independent College Association, you can use your 91ÖÆƬ³§ associate degree to fulfill your general education requirements upon transfer. Please note the following:

  • You must earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree
  • Your transfer school must be a Kansas private, non-profit college or university

Transfer FAQ

Yes, due to 91ÖÆƬ³§â€™s accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas State Board of Education. However, there are several things to consider when transferring credits to other schools.

    • A course that transfers at another institution will not necessarily count toward a major or program. Course equivalencies for most colleges and universities in Kansas are available on their respective web sites, so it is important to familiarize yourself with course catalogs and other materials published by the transfer school relevant to your major, and to consult with advising staffs at both schools. Only then can you know which classes will both transfer and count toward your chosen major or program.

    • The most readily accepted credits at four-year colleges and universities are academic in nature. Classes that are remedial, vocational/technical, community education, or related to personal interest are not as widely accepted at most four-year colleges and universities.

    • If you transfer to a Kansas public university with the 45 credit hour distribution of courses in the Kansas Board of Regents , you will have satisfied the general education requirements for the Kansas public university you choose. However, many majors have specific gen ed requirements, which means even though you have completed 45 credit hours at 91ÖÆƬ³§ and followed the distribution requirements of the Articulation Agreement, you may have to take additional major-specific gen ed courses at your transfer school.

The bottom line is it is very important for those transferring from 91ÖÆƬ³§ to another college or university to choose a major and school early and then consult with advisors at both schools in order to select courses which will both transfer and count for that major.

You do not, but there are several reasons why you may wish to complete your associate degree.

    1. Four-year colleges and universities are more likely to accept you as a junior and may waive additional general education requirements.

    2. An associate degree shows employers that you've met a set of requirements toward a specific degree plan and have not taken random courses.

There is a growing list of courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) for guaranteed transfer among all Kansas public postsecondary institutions.

      Transfer Timeline

Depending on what you want to do and where you want to go next, you should make some key choices early on in your course schedule. To help guide your decisions, speak with an academic advisor to review transfer timelines at the appropriate time. Keep in mind different institutions and degree programs may require different paths.

        1. Even though you just recently made the decision to attend 91ÖÆƬ³§, there are more decisions to be made! Now is the time to begin gathering information to help you. There are several resources available including the and links above to Kansas four-year universities.
        2. If you plan to obtain a degree from 91ÖÆƬ³§ prior to transferring and don't have a specific degree in mind, it is best to obtain an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree as these degrees are designed with the intention of transferring. Some private colleges will accept courses taken as part of an Associate of Applied Science degree, but make sure you check with the four-year college you plan to transfer to before deciding to pursue this degree. Information on each of these degrees can be obtained from our .
        3. As you select courses to take at 91ÖÆƬ³§, keep in mind that most four-year universities have more general education requirements than we do. Therefore, when choosing electives for your associate degree, do not simply take any course that you wish. It is better to take the "extra" general education courses that the four-year university requires to fulfill the electives for the associate degree.
        4. Many programs at four-year universities have a minimum GPA requirement in order to be accepted into the major, so study hard while at 91ÖÆƬ³§!

Be sure to contact advising@butlercc.edu at any time to help you with your transfer decisions!

        1. Make a list of and prioritize the characteristics of a four-year university that are important to you. Consider factors such as degrees offered, cost, location, size of student body, co-curricular activities, services for commuter students, distance education opportunities, job placement services, and any other features that are important to you. Do not hesitate to check out several colleges and universities. Just because someone tells you it is a good institution, does not mean that you will have the same perception. Therefore, make sure that the institution offers the features that are important to you!
        2. Based on the information you have gathered, narrow down your potential transfer universities to three top choices. Contact the admissions offices at those universities to arrange a campus visit within the next couple of months. When you visit a campus, make sure that you arrange an appointment with an advisor for your major.
        3. Submit an application for admission to the universities you are considering. Be sure to pay attention to deadlines, application fees, and other required documentation such as transcripts. Make a copy of the completed applications for your records. Many universities require students to be admitted before scholarship applications will be processed, so it is important to apply for admission early!
        4. Begin compiling documentation that may be required when applying for scholarships. Contact instructors and others who can write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Be sure to send them a thank you note. Also begin working on any that may be required.
        1. Contact the four-year universities to confirm that your applications for admission were received.
        2. Finalize any scholarship essays and mail with scholarship applications and recommendation letters. The deadline for many universities is February 1.
        3. Apply for and contact the four-year universities to confirm that your scholarship applications were received.
        4. Once you know where you have been accepted and what scholarships you have been granted, you are ready to make a final choice on which university to attend.
        5. Many universities have transfer enrollment days in April and June, so make plans to attend the transfer day at the university of your choice. Take an unofficial copy of your transcript with you and arrange to have an official, final copy of your 91ÖÆƬ³§ transcript sent after your final grades have been posted.
        6. Begin checking into on and off campus housing options, if applicable.
